New Teacher Must Have Item
When I heard the words “here are the keys to your new classroom”, I immediately began planning in my mind what I wanted to do. I knew I needed to clean the room, prep the room, and of course lesson plan during the summer. All that I learned in student-teacher observations and in class seemingly went out the window. I felt a bit overwhelmed each year up until my third year of teaching. Let’s be honest, no amount of schooling will truly prepare you for what is ahead of you. It takes time, patience, and trial and error.
Many of you who’ve followed my journey through the years know that I’m not just a teacher but also an elementary vice principal. My job has been to help the teachers in any capacity but specifically with the organization. It’s really not a job for me because I’m so passionate about it. I listen to what the needs are and try to find solutions that will better organize the teachers for the year!
In my first year of teaching I read the book by Harry Wong, “The First Weeks of School” it is an excellent book. However, I started to feel like I wasn’t able to execute it all. At that point in my life, it was the holy grail of teacher resources. I was able to use what I could but it didn’t come easy.
Fast forward to all these years later and I can say the true formula for successful teaching is to ask for help, learn from those who went before you, and don’t be afraid to fail! It has helped me tremendously and now I’m able to share all that I’ve learned with new teachers!
