President's Day Celebration in the Classroom

February by far has to be one of the busiest months of the school year. You’ve got Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, and also President’s Day. The thing about President’s Day is that there’s no school so it’s best to try and talk to your students about the holiday before your day off.

I’ve put together some ways in which I like to introduce my students to the holiday and want to share these ideas with you:

Start your unit with a KWL chart to determine what your students know already, what they want to know, and at the end of your lesson what your students learned from the lesson.

Next, think about which read-aloud books you’d like to incorporate into your lesson.

I enjoy reading Grace for President and Duck for President. My students LOVE these books and if you want to take it a step closer, you could have your students write their own books about what they would do as president.

Next, ask your students questions to get a clear understanding of what they are learning. Help them find context clues that give them the information they can retain for later. Students love when they are actively learning about a new topic.

Let me take you closer to how you can incorporate a Presidents Day mini-unit into your day.

I created this resource to accompany your Presidents Day lesson plans for the celebration of the holiday.

This resource includes:

-Presidents Day Slides with facts and a youtube bio video

-The slides include KWL, Writing Prompt, What is Presidents Day, Why do we celebrate?, Fun Facts, and much more!

-Wordsearch Puzzles of President Washington, Lincoln, and Biden both in black and white

-There are a total of 27 slides about the Presidents Day holiday. President Washington, Lincoln, and Biden are the main features.

This Presidents Day Mini Unit Google Slides is perfect for students to research presidents day. Your students will learn about the presidents included. You can have them research further information about them at school at home or the library and bring the completed project to school with my Presidents Day biography resource.

How will you be celebrating Presidents Day this year? I hope these suggestions are helpful and your students enjoy them!
